KCA advocates for patients, expanded access at NCLC 2016

KCA president Dr. Thad Schneider, vice president Dr. Tobi Jeurink, legislative chairman Dr. Travis Oller, and member Dr. Tim Bolz, along with several KCA student members, joined more than 700 other chiropractic physicians, students last week at the American Chiropractic Association (ACA) 2016 National Chiropractic Leadership Conference (NCLC) in Washington, DC.

The KCA attendees joined a diverse group of chiropractic physicians in the nation's capital to hear speeches from government leaders, receive advocacy training and urge elected officials to enact federal legislation that would achieve full physician status for DCs in Medicare. NCLC attendees also asked lawmakers to support bills that would benefit patients, help chiropractic graduates qualify for federal programs that would enable them to practice in underserved areas in exchange for student loan debt relief, and expand access to chiropractic services for veterans and active-duty military personnel.

The KCA group met with members of the Kansas Congressional Delegation Congressional including Sen. Jerry Moran, Rep. Mike Pompeo, Rep. Tim Heulskamp, Rep. Kevin Yoder, and Rep. Lynn Jenkins. They also heard conference keynote speaker Sen. Johnny Isakson discusse the need for chiropractic care to be made available to veterans returning from Iraq. "62 percent of our veterans coming home need musculoskeletal work," said Sen. Isakson.

Attendees also heard from U.S. Representative Ryan Costello, a member of the Veterans Affairs Committee; U.S. Representative Ron Kind, who serves on the Subcommittee on Health; U.S. Representative Mark Meadows, a member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform; and U.S. Representative Adrian Smith, a member of the House Ways and Means Committee.
